Forms are used extensively in many Chinese and Japanese martial arts.
Forms are intended to instill self-discipline in the performer and improve
balance, timing and precision.
Traditionally forms were practiced so that the student learned the techniques
they contained so well that in combat they could reproduce them almost without
thinking.
Forms were a visual record of techniques which were handed down from master
to student at a time when written records were not available.
The practice of forms has been challenged by some martial artists as a
viable method of training for modern self-defense.
