During their martial arts training at Black Belt Martial Arts Academy,
students will be introduced to a number of traditional weapons. Many
of these weapons were farming tools as these were readily available and
during various points in history the ruling classes banned weapons such
as swords and knives.
Nunchaku: A weapon made of two short rods joined by a short chain or rope.
The origin of the nunchaku is confusing. One source notes that nunchaku
were used to flail wheat, but this may be a mistake as the Okinawan flail,
like European ones, have human-height length handles. There is also a
reference to a two section long sweeping tool which was cut down to be
easily concealed under ones clothing. Nunchaku may have been used as a
horse bit.
Bo: Bo is a Japanese term meaning staff. The bo is a wooden stick
which measures about 6 feet in length. In China, the monks of the Shaolin
Monastery took spears originally intended to be used from horseback and
removed the spearhead which they found too aggressive-looking and
inappropriate in their peaceful monastery.
Jo: Jo is a Japanese term for staff. A jo is a light hardwood staff
about 4 feet long.
